Last week at my new job they had the annual Employee Appreciation picnic. Free food, music, games, and such. I almost won a $50 pre-paid credit card in a 'name that tune' type contest. I was tied with another woman and we each needed one point. The winning song for her was "500 Miles" by The Proclaimers, and I was just a split second slower in raising my hand than she was.

Also, they had an arcade tent with several free arcade games and 4 Nintendo Wiis. With the Nintendo Wiis in addition to just playing for fun, they were having a contest. The people with the highest scores on Guitar Hero III, Wii Bowling, Mario Kart, and the lowest score on Wii Golf all would win a Nintendo Wii. I tried Wii Bowling and sucked pretty hardcore. So I thought, what the hell? I'll give Guitar Hero a shot. I'm okay at Guitar Hero. I'm halfway through the Hard level here at home. For the contest you played on Medium and you could choose your own song. I played "Bulls On Parade" by Rage Against the Machine and got over 140,000 points, which got me the high score for the contest at that point. Honestly, I figured since the picnic went from 11:00 a.m. until 12 midnight (for the night shifts) someone would surely knock me off the top. I played at 12 noon. Well, I was wrong. I won a Nintendo Wii! I rock!

Downside is that I already own one. Well, I don't know if you could consider it a downside, but it would probably be a much more satisfying win if I didn't own one already. Anyhoo, I'll try selling it. I figure I could probably get around $200 for it. I'm pretty sure it's just the basic console, although it might include Wii Sports.

I'm just all bouncy because this is the biggest prize I've ever won.

In other less exciting work news, I posted a payment today for one of the local sportscasters, and last week I posted one for a player on the St. Louis Blues.

Katie went to Vintage Vinyl (local new/used music store) yesterday to trade in some CDs and DVDs so she could hopefully get enough money to buy the new Utada Hikaru CD. She asked me if there was anything I wanted in case she had enough money left over to get it. I discovered that Lacuna Coil just released a new album last month, and Katie did end up with enough money to get the CD for me. I've listened to it four times since last night, and I have to say it fucking rocks! Love it.

My oldest sis and her family were in the area this weekend so all the family (except for my oldest brother and his son, who are in North Carolina) went to The Old Spaghetti Factory in St. Louis. Yummy food. We were a little bummed because due to our rather large group of 10 we were relegated to an upstairs seating area where it appeared they put all the big groups, and it didn't quite have the same ambiance as sitting downstairs. The ambiance was pretty much the main reason we went there. We could have had similar food for similar prices at Olive Garden and wouldn't have had to drive as far. Oh well, it was still fun. The kids were all pretty well behaved, and we all got to chat and visit. I was sitting next to my youngest niece, Anna, who is two. They brought out our spumoni, but they didn't bring us new spoons. Anna had used her spoon for her mac and cheese, so I wiped it off with a napkin and handed it to her. She immediately said 'Thank you!' without prompting. I was so surprised because usually with kids that young, they always have to be prompted by mom and dad to use please and thank you.

Worked at the Hut for five and a half hours today. Shipment day. Blargh. Then I mowed the front lawn when I got home. I think I can sufficiently count putting shipment away and mowing the lawn as my exercise for the day. You try lugging 20 to 40 pound boxes of frozen dough around and then using a push mower on a horribly uneven lawn and tell me you didn't get some exercise. :p

...boldly going forward 'cause we can't find reverse.

Today we saw the new Star Trek film, and everyone in our group really enjoyed it. As far as I know, I think I was the only person in our group who hasn't watched the original. So fans of the original may not be disappointed. There were 9 of us.

I thought it was really well done. The guy who played Kirk was excellent. Zachary Quinto was an amazingly well done young Spock. Simon Pegg was great as Scotty, even though he got less screen time than I would have liked. Winona Ryder was almost completely unrecognizable as Spock's mom, and she did a fine job in the process. Leonard Nimoy was great as always. Oh, and Karl Urban was perfect as "Bones" McCoy. Everybody in the group who had seen the original knew that he was "Bones" as soon as he hit the screen before he even introduced himself to Kirk. It was pretty funny. (I actually forgot he was in this and recognized him as being Cupid on Xena. Ha!)

The movie was a lot of fun, and I think it's one that's definitely worth going to the theater for.

A question for those who have seen the movie, though. Do you remember which character was named Gaila? Was it the green-skinned Starfleet cadet? The reason I ask is because Gaila was played by Rachel Nichols, who starred in the short-lived series The Inside and the last season of Alias, and I'm just wondering how I missed her.

I also didn't realize until after we were outside the theater that I hadn't paid attention to the Starfleet computer voice. It made me sad because this was Majel Barrett's last performance as the Starfleet computer voice before she passed away.

So, I would recommend it. Good stuff.

As I posted a while ago, I was hired at a new job after over a year of unemployment/part-time employment. The second week is almost over and I think I'm doing well. My supervisor walked by my desk this morning and said someone was bragging about me, meaning my trainer. I guess based on past new hires, I'm catching on to procedures quickly and not needing to ask too many questions. It's not a difficult job at all, so far. I've heard them talking about some stuff that's apparently more complicated, but I've got a 90-day probationary training period. So I'm sure I'll be fine. My trainer had to leave early today for her regular dialysis treatment and she left me alone with some tasks to do. I'm pretty sure I did everything correctly while I was on my own. I guess we'll see tomorrow when she double-checks my work.

The rest of life is pretty typical. I'm still going to work at Pizza Hut every Sunday and every other Friday. The choir concert went very well. We'll be singing at both St. Louis Pride and Metro-East Pride in June, and then we'll be on summer hiatus. My bowling league is on summer break. My life is pretty much just going to be work and some social engagements here and there.

Life isn't too bad for me right now. The only real stress-point continues to be finances. I racked up a lot of debt over the past year, and when I get my first pay check from the new job, I'm going to figure out how much money I'm going to have to divide amongst the credit card companies once all the other bills are paid. I'm really not sure what I'm going to be able to do. I doubt I'll be making enough to make any kind of progress on my credit card bills. I fear I might not have enough left over each month to even pay the interest on each card, let alone minimum payments. I guess we'll see in about a week.

So I caved and got a Dreamwidth account. So far two pretty damn cool things strike me.

First, content importing through the DW site. No need for LJ Sec or LJ Archive. Do it right through the DW site. And it can import comments, tags, icons and profile info. The tags part really made me happy.

Second, cross-posting. You can cross-post to another supported blogging site like LJ, IJ, or Blogger. I only have a free account so I can only do one, but that does save me a little time if I can cross-post to LJ. Paid accounts aren't horribly pricey, although I can't afford one right now. Maybe in the future since Paid can do 3 cross-post accounts and Premium Paid can do 5.

So I guess I have another competitor for my journal home. Or maybe I'm developing ADD or some kind of compulsive disorder. Dunno. I know Inksome doesn't seem to be going anywhere. My account's permanent so I'll still mirror over there. My IJ account is permanent, too. Really the main competition is between DW and LJ, I guess. We'll see. I don't see LJ leaving my bookmarks anytime soon, though.

Choir concert was this weekend. It went very well. I think everybody was happy with how it went. It was a lot of work to get there, but it ended up being a lot of fun. Now we have two weeks off until we start rehearsing to sing at Metro-East Pride and St. Louis Pride.

Gay In a Small Town

I've apparently become the gay authority at Pizza Hut. I guess, yeah, I'm the only one there, as far as I know. I just find it funny when my co-workers come to me with questions, whether they apply to me or not. Well, Rachel brings it up in some form every time she sees me because she's crazy and goofy. I don't really care much about that. I really don't care much about it at all.

Anyway, today it was pretty dead. I left an hour early. But before I left, the manager, Nick, told me that he was having a conversation with some friends and one girl said something about believing gay people are born that way. Nick doesn't agree and thinks it's about the environment they grew up in. The girl got really, really mad at him about that and wouldn't let the discussion remain civil. So basically Nick was telling me this to ask me what I think, since I am the token gay at Pizza Hut, apparently. lol

Like I said, I really don't care because everybody there is cool about it, including Nick. I just find it funny. I guess when you work at a restaurant in a small town like ours this kind of thing happens. I become ever so fascinating.

Just commented to someone on my f-list with this, but I figured I'll put it here, too. Because I'm tired of hearing about it.

I'm really tired of Perez Hilton being a gay spokesperson, or trying to be one. His celeb name is taken from a vapid woman who got her celebrity because she's rich, and those kind of people is what he makes his celebrity on. He's annoying, kind of offensive, and a total opportunist. Trying to use the Miss USA or America or whatever pageant to try to actually be anything less than useless was a stupid attention grabbing attempt.

Perez, go away. We don't want you to represent us.

As for Miss California, I don't care. The current president of the United States once said he believes marriage is between a man and a woman. What did I hear from all his supporters who are probably currently frothing at the mouth at Miss California? "Oh, but those are his religious beliefs. He wouldn't use them to dictate his presidency." Sure, I agree that he wouldn't, but why are you so pissed off at a fucking Miss USA contestant for saying the same thing? Was it tactless? Sure. Do I care? No, I don't FUCKING care.

So a handful of you folks out there in f-list land and others in my LJ communities have mentioned Dreamwidth, and I think at least one person on my IJ list has mentioned it, too. So I'll bite. Enlighten me on this whole Dreamwidth thing. Because I hadn't heard anything about it until all of you started popping up with the "So and so gave me a Dreamwidth code." and "Anybody got a Dreamwidth code?"

What makes this one so exciting and/or different? I'm already mirroring my LJ at 2 other journal sites. InsaneJournal is pretty nice, and the person or persons who maintain it make their presence known every so often. Plus I have a permanent account there. Inksome, the project formerly known as Scribblit, is nice but pretty much a ghost town, and the maintainer hasn't made a public peep in months as far as I've seen. But I'll keep mirroring because I have a permanent "Early Contributor" account there as well. Maybe there will be life in it again someday. So unless my entire (and I do mean all of you) friends list here on LJ makes a mass exodus to Dreamwidth--thus rendering my free LJ account pointless--I doubt I'll be signing up for a Dreamwidth account.

Or maybe there's something that's super-dee-duper special about Dreamwidth that I just have to have? I just really don't feel like mirroring on yet another site. I'm curious though. What's the deal, y'all?

If I were a teenager right now and still in high school, I don't know if I'd have the guts to do the Day of Silence. Especially in Mascoutah. Good luck to anyone out there participating.

Today will be a busy day, and I'm kind of dreading it because I didn't get very good sleep last night. I've been having sinus issues the past couple days and have been too congested to use my bipap machine. Then last night I woke up about 4 a.m. with a major headache. So I took some Excedrin and moved out to the recliner where I finally fell asleep and managed to stay asleep until about 7:30.

But anyway, today:

-Go to court to get my license back. I got a speeding ticket last week, and the managers at the Hut have been kind of annoyed that I haven't been able to make deliveries to the Air Force base because I haven't had photo I.D.
-Go pick up Katie's prescriptions at Walgreens and Walmart.
-Go to Katie's old high school in St. Charles, MO so she can get her high school transcripts.
-Work at the Hut from 5:30 until midnight.

Hopefully I'll be able to get some good sleep tonight. All I have to do tomorrow is help do set work for CHARIS that involves sitting and cutting and pasting colored paper, and then I have awards for my bowling league at 7 p.m. Probably one of the least busy Saturdays I've had in a while. But first, I have today.

Gaming geek? Me? Noooooo.

Me: (after a couple seconds of the song) Why do you have Sonic the Hedgehog music on your computer?
Her: Because it's part of the Super Smash Brothers Brawl (video game on the Wii, in case you don't know) soundtrack that I downloaded.
Me: Oh. [pause] Actually it's kind of scary that I knew that was Sonic the Hedgehog music after only a couple seconds.
Her: Yeah, it was.

I played a lot of Sonic the Hedgehog when all my family had was the Sega Genesis and Game Gear. :op

Just found a piece of spam in my Inbox that seemed really, really pointless. The subject line was "Pirates Offer Obama An Early Military Test" and the e-mail text was "ER Says Goodbye After 15 Years." Plain text. No hyperlinks. No attachments. Just that. What exactly was the point of that? I mean if you're going to do something just to annoy someone, wouldn't you want to do it in a way you can watch or see the result somehow?

Reaganites unite?

Apparently, some gay Republicans, upset with the Log Cabin Republicans, have formed a new 527 political organization for gay Republicans, called GOProud. They claim to be taking a more "Reaganite" approach to politics than the Log Cabin, but what that actually means remains to be seen.

This is from a recent locked post in gsa_lj. When I told Katie this she asked, "Reaganite? What does that even mean? They're going to be senile and eat jelly beans?"

I giggled.

I lost my legal secretary job on March 21, 2008. One year and three weeks later, I FINALLY (yes, it needs that much emphasis after my ongoing frustrations) have a new full-time job. I will start as a Patient Account Rep on April 27 for Barnes-Jewish HealthCare in St. Louis.

I'm thrilled. I think Barnes is going to be a great place to work. They have a good reputation in the area, and health care is a very stable industry. No matter what the economy, people still get sick, and hospitals still need people like me to submit patient bills to insurance companies and Medicaid. Plus the building where I'll be working still has good Metro (public transit) access. I basically drive 5 minutes to the train station by my house, ride the train to the Forest Park stop, and take a special shuttle to my building. They offer Metro discounts, and parking is free. So in case I need to drive one day it would be no hassle to do so.

Yay. I was so sick of job hunting, and now it is finally over for me.

I don't buy the glitch explanation or the "adult content" explanation. Do I think Amazon is totally anti-LGBT? No. Do I think this was more than a glitch? Oh fuck yes, I do. Honestly, I think this is very possibly the result of anti-gay sources outside of Amazon getting their voices heard by some Amazon higher ups that didn't quite think through what they were doing. I have a feeling this will be remedied quickly. As fast as this fire has spread on the Internet, Amazon would be stupid to not revisit this and fix it.

Did Obama do anything today or within the past couple days that might upset a conservative? My sister and her husband are quite conservative. They were Dubya supporters 'til the end, and, god help 'em, they voted for Huckabee in the Republican primary. Her husband listens to Rush Limbaugh. O_O She's posted status messages on Facebook in the past that were anti-Obama, and the conservative "let's skew stats!" type e-mails haven't stopped just because Dubya's not in the White House anymore.

The reason I ask what Obama's been up to is because of her most recent status message on Facebook.

. . . can't handle much more of this. (And one of her friends commented, "I agree! Now what are we going to do about it?" Blah.)

As far as I know, there's nothing in her personal life that would warrant a comment like that. She seemed fine the other day when she asked me if I could do lunch this Saturday when they're back in Illinois for Easter.

The thing is, with Vermont and Iowa and Washington D.C., it makes me wonder what she's talking about. She's never been cryptic about her anti-Obama comments, but considering I came out to her at Christmas, I could see her making a cryptic comment in response to all the progress made in LGBT rights recently to spare my feelings. Problem is that her cryptic is just suspicious and not that cryptic at all. Or maybe I'm reading to much into it and it does have to do with Obama.

I've known for years that she's conservative and Republican. She and her husband had their soon-to-be teenage son spouting pro-Dubya crap when he was five. It just hurts my heart to think that she would really be this dismayed about giving LGBT folks equal rights. She's my sister and I love her. I don't even know if she realizes that not wanting same-sex marriage laws to pass means she doesn't want me to have equal rights to her. Her 20th wedding anniversary is coming up, and I wonder if she would attend my wedding, if I were to have one. (I probably won't considering the polyamory situation, which I'm fine with. But I still want the right to marry whether I do it or not.)

It's not all that surprising. Just disappointing and disheartening.

I don't think prospective employers quite get what entry-level is supposed to mean. I got my job alert e-mail from CareerBuilder and there was this listing:

F/T ENTRY-LEVEL LEGAL ASSISTANT Position available, experience preferred.

Wait, it's an entry-level position, but you want experience? In truth, here's the translation of that listing title:

The economy is shit. I want someone with 10 years of experience who's willing to take a $10,000 cut in their annual pay for the all the same work.

Maddening! The problem is that the economy is shit, and there are people out there with lots of experience who got laid off and would be willing to get paid less for basically the same job.

Amy brought her dog, Odie, over for a visit this weekend. On Saturday we took the two dogs to the local dog park. They seemed to enjoy it. Odie made a couple friends. There was dog in particular that I think was an Australian shepherd mix that seemed to take to Odie. The two of them playfully chased each other a couple times. There was also a male mini schnauzer that Odie got a little fixated on and tried to mount a couple times. Poor little thing was the smallest dog there. I wonder if that's what got Odie so interested. Tasha was a bit less social than Odie. She seemed more interested in just sniffing the area. There was also one point when two women walked by outside the fenced off-leash area, and Tasha whined and showed more interest in them than she did any of the dogs in the off-leash area. It was the first time Tasha was around other dogs off-leash besides our neighbor's chihuahua and Odie, so maybe she'll be more social next time we go.

The funny thing is that this morning Tasha seemed genuinely sad that Odie wasn't here anymore. Last night she only ate half of her food, and her full meal now is half of what we used to give her because she used to eat half of the full meal and leave the rest sitting for two days until we threw away the old food. That was wasting money, so we switched to giving her half as much food. Anyway, back to her depression. ;) We give her a Denta stick every morning for breakfast and she didn't eat that right away either. She truly seemed to be moping around and she wandered over to Amy with this forlorn look on her face like she was saying, "Why'd you take my boyfriend away?" Too cute. At least I know that if we could have a second dog, Tasha would probably like it.

I took Amy to work this morning because she had to take her car to the shop. When we went to the park on Saturday she discovered that she couldn't get her key out of the ignition and then her gear shift got stuck in park. We managed to get it out of park and she found a place that could look at it before they closed. They figured it was something with the electrical system but said they would need a full day to diagnose and repair. So we took her car in this morning. The real worry is how much this is going to cost because nobody around here has a whole heck of a lot of money right now. Hopefully it won't be too much.

Last night I finished The Night Watch by Sarah Waters. It was okay. I didn't enjoy it as much as Affinity or Fingersmith. I think I had a little bit of a hard time feeling for the characters. They're living in London in the time of World War II, and you'd think I would sympathize, but I had a hard time getting in their shoes, I guess. The writing was still excellent, but the plot dragged a little.

I got Tipping the Velvet through PaperBackSwap, so that's next on my reading list.
